Building/Code Enforcement

The City of Hurricane has an established Building Department and Code Enforcement Office. Article 1705 of the City Code provides the intent to promote the general health, welfare and safety of the community by providing building construction guidelines to comply with the West Virginia State Fire Commission, encouraging the utilization of appropriate construction practices to minimize flood damage in the future and decreasing danger to public health by protecting water supply and natural drainage.

Building permits are required of any person, partnership, business or corporation that may undertake the construction, reconstruction, enlargement, alteration, relocation or demolition of any building or structure, including electrical or mechanical upgrading.

Inspections will be performed and certificates of occupancy will be issued in the case of new construction.

Sample applications for permits and fee schedules are available on this web site. Code requirements in part 17 of the Hurricane City Code are available by linking to MuniCode from this web site. Questions may be answered by the Code Enforcement Officer at (304) 562-5896.
